"But each spring...a gardening instinct, sure as the sap rising in the trees, stirs within us.
We look about and decide to tame another little bit of ground."

How beautifully leaves grow old. How full of light and colors are their last days.~~ John Burroughs

Dear Members,
This is a written explanation of a choice of By-laws amendments that we wish to consider at our November meeting. At our October meeting we discussed an amendment to the Dues article of our Bylaws. To review that discussion - we have a need to recover $621 in “Other Income” in order to bring to balance the Internal funding portion of our 07-08 budget. To address the shortfall for this year, we asked active members in particular to please consider a $10 contribution to the RGC. If all active members do this, it will add $490 toward our deficit for this year. The rest of the deficit is to be covered by monthly raffles of the centerpieces, and hopeful anticipation of other sources of additional income to arise during the year.
To keep this from happening in 2008-09 and the future, we determined that a $10 (total) increase in dues would greatly assist our internal budget and planning. Last year, we approved a $5.00 increase to dues ($30), and this is reflected in your current Yearbook. This year, we are proposing an additional $5.00, making the total increase $10, and total dues therefore $35.00. This would be in effect for March 31, 2008.
Therefore, your executive board proposes a choice between the following amendments to Article IV, Section A:
Note that it is helpful to have a cushion in case of low membership or other possible circumstances. We welcome your thoughts at the November General meeting.

PROGRAMS

Bryan Hamlin will be our speaker this Thursday and will be premiering his slide presentation, Summer and Fall in the Middlesex Fells. He will also have note cards featuring his photographs of Fells subjects and trail maps available for sale.

HOSTESS CENTERPIECE RAFFLE

MEMORY TREE CEREMONY

Will be held on Sunday December 2nd, at 4pm. All members and their families and friends are welcome to attend this brief ceremony on the Lawn of the Reading Public Library. Members are asked to collect at least 3 donations from family, friends and neighbors. Each name, or light, purchased is a $5.00 contribution. The names read at the ceremony will be listed in a book that will be on display in the Library through December. Sustaining members are welcome and encouraged to participate as well. Forms will be distributed at the November meeting.

EXHIBITS

The committe has enough people to decorate the library. The decorating will take place on Dec. 10 at 10:00am.

CIVIC BEAUTIFICATION

**Library cleanup date has changed from November 9 to Tuesday, November 13 at 9am.

HORTICULTURE

The Parker Tavern garden has been put to bed and now we are getting ready for the holidays. We will be decorating the Parker Tavern for their holiday open house with a colonial flair of fresh greens, fruits, pomanders, and cinnamon. The horticulture committee is doing some of the arrangements and shopping but we need some help from our members. "Many hands make light work" as the old saying goes and it really is a fun and festive activity to do as a club. The Antiquarian Society who manages the Parker Tavern is extremely grateful for the work that we do. Please see the lists below.
Two items needed: Decorations to make:
A sign up will be available at the November meeting or you can give Michele or Kim a call. These are not difficult and the volunteer will be provided with pictures of these arrangements to help them with making them. Kathy D'Angelo and Bea Erickson have also generously lent us their cone forms to use which are very well made and will make the project easier to do. (Thank you ladies!)
  1. cone form with orange pomanders, small apples and greens
  2. one form with lemons, limes and greens
  3. string two bags of cranberries. We need four or five volunteers for this.
Orange Pomander Workshop:
Michele Occhiuti will be having a workshop at her home to make these wonderfully scented oranges. We will be using these as part of our decorations and the person making one of the cone forms will use some of these. This will take place November 27 at 9:30 a.m. Anyone interested can sign up at the November meeting or give Michele a call.
Dates to Remember:
Thank you in advance for your help and we hope everyone can stop by to visit the Parker Tavern to see our festive colonial holiday decorations on Sunday. There will also be some entertainment during the open house by singer Lynn Feingold.

We will then head across the street to Trinity Church to hear organist Colin Lynch from 12:15-12:45. After that we will come back to the library where we will have lunch at the new restaurant there called Novels. The tour and the organist are free. The lunch is $15.95 for the buffet and you pay when you eat. I will be organizing car pools so that people who do not feel comfortable driving into the city do not have to.
