How beautifully leaves grow old. How full of light and colors are their last days.~~ John Burroughs
Dear Members,
This is a written explanation of a choice of By-laws amendments that we wish to consider at our November meeting. At our October
meeting we discussed an amendment to the Dues article of our Bylaws. To review that discussion - we have a need to recover $621
in “Other Income” in order to bring to balance the Internal funding portion of our 07-08 budget. To address the shortfall for
this year, we asked active members in particular to please consider a $10 contribution to the RGC. If all active members do this,
it will add $490 toward our deficit for this year. The rest of the deficit is to be covered by monthly raffles of the
centerpieces, and hopeful anticipation of other sources of additional income to arise during the year.
To keep this from happening in 2008-09 and the future, we determined that a $10 (total) increase in dues would greatly assist
our internal budget and planning. Last year, we approved a $5.00 increase to dues ($30), and this is reflected in your current
Yearbook. This year, we are proposing an additional $5.00, making the total increase $10, and total dues therefore $35.00.
This would be in effect for March 31, 2008.
Therefore, your executive board proposes a choice between the following amendments to Article IV, Section A:
- Choice A: This raises the dues for ALL members.
“The dues for active and sustaining members shall be $35.00 per year which includes the cost of the Federation Newsletter
(Mayflower) that all members are required to receive.” Adding the 49 active members and 28 sustaining members, we have 77
members. 77 x $35 = $2695 dues in 08 – 1900 dues in 07 = $795 additional funds – $621 shortfall amount in 07 = $174 “cushion”
funds.
- Choice B: This raises the dues $5 for ACTIVE members only.
“The dues for active members shall be $35.00 per year and for sustaining members shall be $30.00 per year which includes the
cost of the Federation Newsletter (Mayflower) that all members are required to receive.” 49 active members x $35 = $1715.
28 sustainers x $30 = $840. Total dues = $2555 dues in 08 – 1900 dues in 07 = $650 additional funds – $621 shortfall amount in
07 = $29 “cushion” funds.
Note that it is helpful to have a cushion in case of low membership or other possible circumstances. We welcome your thoughts
at the November General meeting.

HORTICULTURE
The Parker Tavern garden has been put to bed and now we are getting ready for the holidays. We will be decorating the Parker
Tavern for their holiday open house with a colonial flair of fresh greens, fruits, pomanders, and cinnamon. The horticulture
committee is doing some of the arrangements and shopping but we need some help from our members. "Many hands make light work" as
the old saying goes and it really is a fun and festive activity to do as a club. The Antiquarian Society who manages the Parker
Tavern is extremely grateful for the work that we do. Please see the lists below.
Two items needed:
- We need to borrow two older looking glass bowls on a pedestal that we can fit on either side of the mantel. These will be
filled with oranges, lemons, kumquats and seeded eucalyptus. please contact Michele or Kim if you think you have something we
could use. Thanks.
- Greens for donation: bittersweet, rose hips, dried hydrangea, spruce, white pine, holly, arborvitea/cedar, and nice looking
pine cones (not the long ones) Please drop off to Kim or Michele by November 26. If you are unable to drop off let us know and we
can pick up.
Decorations to make:
A sign up will be available at the November meeting or you can give Michele or Kim a call. These are not difficult and the
volunteer will be provided with pictures of these arrangements to help them with making them. Kathy D'Angelo and Bea Erickson
have also generously lent us their cone forms to use which are very well made and will make the project easier to do.
(Thank you ladies!)
- cone form with orange pomanders, small apples and greens
- one form with lemons, limes and greens
- string two bags of cranberries. We need four or five volunteers for this.
Orange Pomander Workshop:
Michele Occhiuti will be having a workshop at her home to make these wonderfully scented oranges. We will be using these as
part of our decorations and the person making one of the cone forms will use some of these. This will take place November 27 at
9:30 a.m. Anyone interested can sign up at the November meeting or give Michele a call.
Dates to Remember:
- November 27 - Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. Pomander workshop at Michele O's
- November 30 - Friday at 9:00 a.m. Decorate at Parker Tavern
- December 2 - Sunday 1-4:00 p.m. Parker Tavern Holiday Open House
- December 3 - Monday at 9:00 a.m. break down of decorations at Parker Tavern
Thank you in advance for your help and we hope everyone can stop by to visit the Parker Tavern to see our festive colonial
holiday decorations on Sunday. There will also be some entertainment during the open house by singer Lynn Feingold.

OUTINGS
On December 7th we have a wonderful program planned. We will start out at the Boston Public Library at 10:00 for an hour-long

come back to the library where we will have lunch at the new restaurant there called Novels. The tour and the organist are free.
The lunch is $15.95 for the buffet and you pay when you eat. I will be organizing car pools so that people who do not feel
comfortable driving into the city do not have to. Please email ekrugman@comcast.net and let me know that you are coming so that
I can keep track of the numbers. ~~ Liz Krugman
