The volunteer training sessions will take place March 5 and March 6 from
1:00-3:00 and 5:00-7:00. All volunteers must attend a training session. Thank
you for your support of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society, we hope you
have a wonderful time volunteering at the 2008 New England Flower Show.
Volunteer Opportunities:
- Flora Garden & Gift: In Flora, you will be helping to raise funds for MHS
through the sale of merchandise that appeals to garden enthusiasts. You will
use a cash register, assist customers, and stock merchandise.
- Flora Book & Print: You will help customers with garden book and print
purchases, assist with book signings, stock merchandise, and use the cash
register. A working knowledge of garden and horticultural literature is
helpful.
- Flora Flower & Plant: If you have flair with floral arranging, Flora Flower &
Plant, where you will arrange flowers and plants for customers is a perfect
place for you. You will also assist in the other Flora shops when needed.
- Lecture Hall, Horticulture Demonstration Stage, and Floral Demonstration Stage:
This year's show will feature a dedicated lecture hall, a horticulture
demonstration stage, and a floral design demonstration stage. You will greet,
assist, and introduce presenters; manage the distribution of handouts, guide
people to the lectures, and monitor each stage.
- Members Lounge: For the Members Lounge you will be checking for active
memberships and welcoming Members to a special Members Only area. For the most
part, you may be seated.
- Show Office: The Show Office is the hub of the Flower Show providing vital
information to visitors, exhibitors, vendors, sponsors, and the press. You will
answer the Flower Show information line, giving clear directions, times, and
other detailed event information to callers. You will be one of the first
contacts visitors have with the show and should provide a positive, professional
sense of customer service to all, including those with emergencies or complaints.
Show Office Volunteer hours extend before, during, and after the Flower Show.
- South Lobby: In the South Lobby you will be handling member services and
volunteer check-in. You will be the first face of the Flower Show; greeting
visitors, handling memberships, answering questions, using a cash register and
credit card machine.
- Special Programming Nights: This years show features many special events
designed to attract and inspire both new and loyal audiences. Each event
involves the coordination of dozens of event partners and sponsors. You will
assist staff in hosting these participants by placing event signage,
distributing name badges, directing participants to their locations, and
handling special requests. A full list of special events appears on the Flower
Show section of our website. We need volunteer help for these specific events:
Plant Geek Night (March 11), Girls Night Out (March 13), and Plantapalooza:
Children and Educators Night (March 14).
- Watering: To keep the Flower Show in top shape throughout the nine days of
exhibition volunteers are need to water before the show opens for the day. You
will be watering the plants that are used for decoration rather than exhibition
– that watering is taken care of by the exhibitors themselves.
